Get to know People for the Parks and Trails of Jackson, Michigan!
People for the Parks and Trails (PPT) is dedicated to enhancing Jackson's quality of life by improving the City's public parks and trails through volunteer projects, fundraising, advocacy and equity.
PPT was founded in 2021 by a group of Jackson residents wanting to improve park and trail offerings in the community. We are a non-profit that works directly with the City of Jackson Parks and Recreation Department to lead volunteer projects and fund small, yet impactful, improvements in parks.
The most recent volunteer season in 2022 went from April through Nov. and had volunteers completing projects at seven parks, two pedestrian trails and one cemetery. Decorative lights were placed in five parks for the holiday season. Around 60 individual volunteers contributed to nearly 20 hours of volunteer time during the volunteer season.
Also in 2022, PPT used a grant from the Jackson Community Foundation to supply two new trash cans for the MLK Equality Trail, the City's main pedestrian trail. Located at the trail intersections of S. MLK Drive and S. West Avenue, these trash cans have helped reduce litter and pet waste along the trail.
Volunteer projects often include spreading mulch in playgrounds, cleaning up litter, trimming brush, clearing out gardens and removing graffiti. During the holiday season, volunteers put up lights in parks to spread holiday cheer to Jackson neighborhoods.
Elected by the general membership, the Board of Directors oversees all group activity as outlined in the by-laws. Our group was given 501c3 non-profit status in 2022. Elected officers are selected at the Annual Meeting every year in March and serve one-year terms. A liaison is provided by the Parks and Recreation Department to help with volunteer projects and planning long-term improvements.
